Curriculum

Francesco Maiorana is an active researcher in Computer Science Education, data mining, and medical informatics with more than twenty years’ experience and more than 100 manuscripts, the first one in 2004, published in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences with, according to Google Scholar, an H index of 17 and an i10-index of 29 and more than 1,000 citations.
He has strong experience in designing and developing learning materials. He has been an active researcher in international, European, and national projects. He has a Ph.D. in Research Methods in Science and Technology from the University of Urbino, Italy, a Master in Computer Science from New York University, USA, and a Master in Electronic Engineering from the University of Catania, Italy.
He has more than thirty years of teaching and research experience, including tutoring and teaching high school, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, teacher preparation courses, including with the International Computer Science Institute of Berkeley, New York University, Kansas State University, and volunteer mentorship in informal education. His last international teaching experience was as an Instructor at Kansas State University during the year 2019-20 where he designed and developed a course (CC-310) in the Computational Core program. Currently, he is teaching computer science to high school students at the I.I.S.S “G. B. Vaccarini” High School in Catania and he is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Catania and at the University of Messina.
He is a Scientix ambassador, the largest network of STEM educators across Europe.
He is a member of the ACM Society, ACM Special Interest Groups on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE), Accessibility (SIGACCESS), Computer and Society (SIGCAS), Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (SIGKDD), Management of Data (SIGMOD), American Educational Research Association (AERA), Association for Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE), Computing At School, Computer Science Teachers Associations, British Educational Research Association (BERA) where he is serving as a convenor for the Special Interest Group on Educational Technology, European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI), IEEE, IEEE Education Society, and Italian Association of Automatic Computation (AICA), American Educational Research Association, International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE), International Society for Engineering Pedagogy (IGP) International Educational Data Mining Society (IEDMS), Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR).
He is one of the co-founders of a local organization, Palestra per la Mente, aiming at fostering a digital culture for engagement in civic society. From 1998 to 2008 he was engaged in civic service, e.g., emergency ambulance rescue and socio-sanitary volunteer.
In the 2018 and 2019 years, he was a family host welcoming a student with the American Field Service. He has volunteered as a foster care family from 2009 to 2017, welcoming children from different ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds.
